Since I have in my\u00a0possession\u00a0a first edition<\/a> copy of the chinese Book of Mormon, I thought it might be fun to compare the original translation with the final version used until 2007 with the newest\u00a0translation\u00a0in use today.<\/p>\n

I thought the best scripture to start off the comparison was Moroni’s promise in Moroni 10:3-5<\/a>. As this was the scripture printed in later editions at the front of the book.<\/p>\n

\n4 \u7576\u4f60\u5011\u8499\u5f97\u9019\u4e9b\u6771\u897f<\/span>\u6642\uff0c\u6211\u52f8\u544a\u4f60\u5011\u8981\u5949\u57fa\u7763\u7684\u540d\u6c42\u554f\u795e\uff0c\u90a3\u4f4d\u6c38\u6046\u4e4b\u7236\uff0c\u9019\u4e9b\u6771\u897f\u662f\u5426\u771f\u5be6\u7684\uff1b\u5982\u679c\u4f60\u5011\u7528\u771f\u5fc3\u8aa0\u610f\u4f86\u6c42\u554f\uff0c\u6709\u8457\u5c0d\u57fa\u7763\u7684\u4fe1\u5fc3\uff0c\u4ed6\u5fc5\u85c9\u8457\u8056\u9748\u7684\u529b\u91cf\uff0c\u5c0d\u4f60\u5011\u986f\u660e\u9019\u4e9b\u6771\u897f<\/span>\u7684\u771f\u5be6\u6027\u3002

\n4 \u6211\u529d\u544a\u4f60\u4eec\u5728\u83b7\u5f97\u8fd9\u4e9b\u4e1c\u897f\u65f6\uff0c\u8981\u5949\u57fa\u7763\u7684\u540d\u6c42\u95ee\u795e\uff0c\u90a3\u4f4d\u6c38\u6052\u4e4b\u7236\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e9b\u4e1c\u897f\u662f\u5426\u662f\u771f\u5b9e\u7684\uff1b\u5982\u679c\u4f60\u4eec\u5bf9\u57fa\u7763\u6709\u4fe1\u5fc3\uff0c\u771f\u5fc3\u8bda\u610f\u5730\u95ee\uff0c\u901a\u8fc7\u5723\u7075\u7684\u529b\u91cf\uff0c\u4ed6\u628a\u8fd9\u4e9b\u4e8b\u60c5\u7684\u771f\u5b9e\u6027\u5411\u4f60\u4eec\u663e\u793a\u3002
\n5 \u4fac\u9760\u5723\u7075\u7684\u529b\u91cf\uff0c\u4f60\u4eec\u5c31\u53ef\u4ee5\u77e5\u9053\u4e00\u5207\u4e8b\u7269\u7684\u771f\u5b9e\u6027\u3002<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The first thing that is fun to notice is the fact the word\u00a0“\u6211\u8981\u52f8\u544a\u4f60\u5011” “I want to tell you” was changed to\u00a0“\u770b\u554a” “Behold”. This word was apparently one of the more difficult phrases to translate in the original translation. ( See “On Either Side<\/a>“)<\/p>\n

Next is the removal of the word “\u6771\u897f<\/span>” “thing” from the later editions. I agree this word is\u00a0unnecessary. Although in verse 5 the original uses the alternative word “\u4e8b\u60c5” and it stayed in later editions. In verse 4 “\u4e8b\u60c5” is used instead of\u00a0“\u6771\u897f<\/span>” while in the previous verse it is removed entirely.<\/p>\n

The two other small changes from the first edition to the circa 2000 edition are the changes of “\u4ec1\u6148<\/span>” to “\u6148\u60b2” and “\u771f\u76f8<\/span>” to “\u771f\u5be6\u6027”. A change to the word mercy and truth.<\/p>\n

There are quite a few changes in the new translation but the one I think is quite needed is the change from the informal “\u4ed6” in verse 4 to the more formal “\u7942<\/span>” “He meaning God”, which I think is more appropriate.<\/p>\n
