Kelley,

How exciting! I served in the DC North mission so it may be a little different, but I expect you will stay with the branch the whole two years. I would check mission.net and ask questions there about the mission, they can answer better. But feel free to ask any questions here and read up on the history. There is a lot to understand. Good luck!

Hi Kate, how exciting for your son! Anything your son can do to immerse himself in the language and culture will help. It is important to learn the proper pronunciation and tones first, the rest will come quickly.

Tell him good luck!

I have a son who wants to serve his mission in China. He has studied Mandarin for two summers.

Do you have advice for him? He is thinking about attending a Mandarin branch on Sundays.

He has a English, Pinyin, traditional Book of Mormon.

Tyler, This is Elder Turpin.
I was interested in seeing coment #2, from an M Billie Anne Lem, from the Mississuaga ward, Mississauga Stake, near Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I'd like to contact her if possible. When I served in the Canadian Mission (1958 - 1960) while serving in the mission home on staff, we got very close to a young Chinese convert by the name of Morely Lem. He had asked if I would speak at his father's funeral. I had never done so before, and so I asked our mission president, Thomas S Monson, what does one usually speak about at a funeral. (Was I wise to ask the one single person who had and will have spoken at more funerals than any other person who has graced this globe.) He said you can't go wrong by addressing the time honored question asked by Job, ie, If a man die will he live again?
Any way, I lost contact with Morely Lem shortly after my mission, and it would be a "tender mercy" if this M Billie Anne Lem should be some relative of my Morely Lem.
Thanks for your efforts with the Chinese work.
